IMRTThrough a CRMC Foundation Denim N Diamonds campaign, equipment called IMRT, or intensity-modulated radiation therapy program, was purchased to assist radiation therapy. IMRT is believed to be the greatest advance in radiation therapy since the introduction of the first linear accelerator in 1960, said a Radiation Therapy supervisor. IMRT represents the first use of a computer system to optimize the radiation delivery technique. She said the radiation oncologist defines the tumor volume and outlines critical organs or healthy tissue that does not need to be treated. The computer then evaluates multiple beam arrangements and comes up with an optimal plan that maximizes the radiation dose to the tumor and spares as much normal tissue as possible. The multi-leaf collimator is an important part of IMRT and is built into the front of the accelerator. It is equipped with metal leaves, or fingers, that mold the beam to conform to the desired shape around the tumor. Through the generous donations of local residents and corporations, CRMC is able to offer the latest technology, which has helped to make the hospital a regional cancer-treatment referral center. |
