August 31, 2007 Cheyenne Regional First in Region to Offer TomoTherapy Advanced Cancer Treatment Technology CHEYENNE – In August, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center began offering the TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system, a groundbreaking radiation therapy for cancer patients. Cheyenne Regional is the only hospital to offer TomoTherapy in a region extending from Rapid City, SD, to Colorado Spring, Colo. “When we treat tumors with radiation therapy, our goal is to target tumors as precisely as possible so that we destroy the tumor but save healthy tissue and organs,” said Cheyenne Regional Radiation Oncologist Jeffrey Carlton, M.D. “TomoTherapy lets clinicians take a 3D image of the patient before every treatment. That means we can check the size, shape and location of a tumor before every treatment and therefore target the tumor more accurately and precisely with prescribed radiation,” said Dr. Carlton. Another benefit of TomoTherapy is its unique treatment delivery pattern. TomoTherapy delivers radiation from all angles around the patient. “For the patient, this means delivering an even more precise dose of radiation to a tumor,” says Cheyenne Regional Radiation Oncologist Don Dickerson, M.D. TomoTherapy also features patented beam-modulating technology that divides a single large beam into many smaller, narrow beams. More angles and more precise modulation means increased accuracy and precision in targeting tumors. This gives the opportunity for higher doses of radiation to be delivered effectively to the tumor while minimizing the dose to the surrounding healthy tissue. The first patient was treated by TomoTherapy in 2003. Since then, TomoTherapy has been installed at university research centers, hospitals, private and governmental institutions and cancer treatment centers in North America, Europe and Asia. It is known in the medical community as one of the most advanced and versatile radiation therapy systems available for the treatment of a wide variety of cancers. “By using TomoTherapy, we are offering our patients state-of-the-art technology and the benefit of receiving more precise, personalized care,” says Dr. Dickerson. Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is a 218-bed premier regional healthcare system that prides itself on delivering the highest standard of quality care to meet the region’s growing healthcare needs. The hospital’s physicians and employees, state-of-the-art facilities and advanced technologies ensure patients will receive exceptional care close to home. -CRMC- |
