Halloween Safety: Tips to keep the night safe

CHEYENNE – With witches, goblins and superheroes descending on neighborhoods across Cheyenne, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s (CRMC) Emergency Department and Safe Kids of Laramie County want to remind parents and trick-or-treaters that certain hazards may be lurking as they roam about in search of goodies.

Both children and adults need to think about safety on Halloween. Parents can ensure that this Halloween will be frightfully fun and not ghoulishly dangerous for their young ghosts and goblins just by taking a few simple Halloween precautions and reminding their trick-or-treaters to remember these safety tips before sending them out:
  • Walk, slither and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying brooms.
  • Cross the street only at corners.
  • Don’t hide or cross the street between parked cars.
  • Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing, so you are more visible. (Remember to put reflective tape on bikes, skateboards and brooms!)
  • Plan your route and share it with your family. If possible, have an adult go with you.
  • Carry a flashlight to light your way.
  • Keep away from open fires and candles.
  • Visit homes that have the porch light on.
  • Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
  • Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.
  • Be cautious of animals and strangers.
  • Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating, and don’t eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard candies can be a choking hazard.
  • Drivers should be cautious of ghosts and goblins; they may forget safety rules in the midst of the holiday excitement.

“We don’t typically see more injuries on Halloween night, but it doesn’t hurt to remind children of safety,” said Tracy Garcia, CRMC Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Manager. However, in the event that you should need to come to CRMC’s Emergency Department, the team of physicians, mid-level providers and nurses will make certain that you are taken care of in a timely, professional manner.

Since May 2005, CRMC’s Emergency Department has partnered with Emergency Associates of Wyoming, LLC, (EAW) to provide physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to ensure quality patient care and outstanding patient satisfaction. Since then wait times have significantly decreased, making the average length of stay decrease from 283 minutes in January 2005 to 215 minutes in June 2005.

CRMC’s Emergency Department is a 15-bed facility that treats patients from infancy through adulthood. The Emergency Department is located in CRMC-West at 214 E. 23rd St. No one is refused treatment, regardless of the diagnosis or his or her ability to pay for treatment. CRMC is the first designated Regional Trauma Center in the state of Wyoming.
