Medical Records Go Electronic

CHEYENNE – Like a handful of hospitals nationwide, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC) has traded its cumbersome paper formatted medical records for a forward-looking Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. EHRs are the future of health information management, capturing, indexing, consolidating, storing and providing secure access to all patient information electronically.

CRMC successfully implemented EHR on May 1, 2006. Joseph Dobson, M.D. was the first member of CRMC’s medical staff to electronically sign a patient’s chart from the comfort of his office without the need to visit the medical records department within the hospital.

EHR is beneficial for patients because it provides

    • Easier access – patients can visit various healthcare practitioners in different locations and each physician can review the same file
    • Safety – eliminates the risk of miscommunication between healthcare providers
    • Timely diagnosis – physicians have quicker access to information and spend less time sifting through records
    • Understanding – patients have access and the ability to review their medical records

EHR provides the following benefits to physicians

    • Document interactions with patients
    • View medical histories and insurance information
    • Make referrals
    • Order laboratory tests and view test results
    • Send electronic prescription requests to pharmacies (reducing the risk that hard-to-read handwriting will lead to medical errors)
    • Flag potentially harmful drug interactions

CRMC is a 206-bed premier regional healthcare system that prides itself on delivering the highest standard of quality care to meet the region’s growing healthcare needs.
