Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is the first in the state to receive Level II Trauma verification

CHEYENNE – The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has verified Cheyenne Regional Medical Center as a Level II Trauma Center, an achievement that recognizes Cheyenne Regional’s dedication to providing the highest quality of care to patients. Cheyenne Regional is the first and only hospital in Wyoming with such a designation.

“With this verification, we have demonstrated our trauma system’s ongoing ability to deliver high quality care to the most complex trauma patients. This verification confirms we meet the very high standards set by the ACS,” said Richard Fermelia, M.D., F.A.C.S., Cheyenne Regional Trauma Medical Director.

To receive this verification, the ACS and its team of experienced trauma surgeons conduct an on-site review using the current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual as a guideline. Key elements of a Level II Trauma Center include:

• 24-hour immediate coverage by trauma surgeons

• 24-hour coverage by the specialties of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, critical care

As a Level II Trauma Center, Cheyenne Regional is committed to injury prevention and to continuing education of trauma team members.

“It was a long and rigorous process to receive this recognition, and our dedicated staff and administration team applied themselves to exceeding the quality measurements set by the ACS committee on Trauma,” said Terry Dimon, RN, Trauma Program Manager.

While ACS verification is not a requirement, Cheyenne Regional was dedicated to achieving this verification to demonstrate its commitment to providing exceptional trauma and critical care. “Residents in the region should feel reassured that Cheyenne Regional meets the highest national standards developed for trauma centers and is able to provide them the best care,” said Charlie Harms, CEO.

“The State of Wyoming Trauma Program is proud of Cheyenne Regional’s verification, making it the first ACS verified Level II Trauma Center in Wyoming,” said Doug Schmitz, MD, FACS, Trauma Medical Director for the State of Wyoming. “The dedication and work this took to accomplish is almost overwhelming.” In addition to having received Level II verification by the ACS, Cheyenne Regional is designated as a Regional Trauma Center by the State of Wyoming, Division of Emergency Services.

The ACS is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice and to improve the care of the surgical patient. The ACS has 59,000 members and is the largest association of surgeons in the world. Longstanding achievements have placed the ACS on the forefront of American surgery and have made it an important advocate for surgical patients.

Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is a 218-bed premier regional healthcare system that prides itself on delivering extraordinary patient care for the region. We meet the highest standards of quality for our patients and we extend our capabilities with advanced procedures and leading technologies to help in the healing process.
