Cheyenne Regional Medical Center the only center in Wyoming to offer advanced cancer treatment

CHEYENNE – One of the latest innovations in cancer treatment, Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), is now available at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is the only cancer treatment center in Wyoming and one of the few in the region to offer this new technology.

IGRT is a new technology that helps target tumors in patients more accurately than ever before. Cheyenne Regional Medical Center utilizes the ExacTrac x-ray system from BrainLAB, which provides the ability to maximize radiation dosage to the tumor while protecting the surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment can be used on a variety of types of cancers including prostate, abdominal, lung and brain.

“When patients come to us, they can be confident in knowing that we are committed to providing the most advanced procedures and leading technologies to help in the healing process,” said Don Dickerson, MD, Radiation Oncologist at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

IGRT helps doctors locate and target tumors with unprecedented speed and precision, resulting in a decrease of side effects historically caused by the irradiation of normal body tissue. It takes into account any variations in body and internal organ movement before and during treatment.

“With this new system, we are able to provide accurate localization within less than one millimeter,” said Jeffrey Carlton, MD, Radiation Oncologist at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. “This means better tumor control and fewer complications for the patient.”

For some patients, tumor markers may be implanted to act as a reference system on which the radiation treatment focuses. These markers do not move. Prior to each radiation treatment, the markers are localized by x-ray images, allowing the doctor to accurately relocate the tumor and accommodate for organ motion on a daily basis. For example, a prostate tumor may move if the patient has a full bladder or rectum. Through IGRT, this movement is detected, maximizing increased accuracy during the treatment.

“Offering IGRT further demonstrates our commitment to providing the very best care to our patients,” said Leonard Geringer, RT, Radiation Oncology Manager.

Cheyenne Regional Medical Center is a 206-bed premier regional healthcare system that prides itself on delivering extraordinary patient care for the region.
