Cryotherapy

A pilot study on the use of cryotherapy for the treatment of benign prostate disease is being done at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

The study, being conducted by Cheyenne urological surgeons James Lugg, MD, of Cheyenne Urological, PC, is being funded by Galil Medical.

It is the first study of this type to be done using cryotherapy (the freezing of tissue) in an attempt to improve outcomes for patients with enlarged, but benign, prostate disease.

Cryotherapy has been used successfully in the treatment of prostate cancer, according to Childs, but this research project marks the first time in the United States this protocol has been used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate which causes men to suffer from difficulties in urination or requires them to get up many times during the night to urinate.

Twenty patients will be chosen for the pilot study, and each patient's progress will be followed in three-month intervals.

Should the results of the study demonstrate that cryotherapy for benign prostate disease has potential as an effective mode of treatment, the Mayo Clinic, UCLA Medical Center, and the University of California at Irvine Medical Center have agreed to initiate a large-scale test of the treatment, along with Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

The first patients to participate in the pilot protocol were treated this week at CRMC. The remaining participants will be selected through Drs. Childs and Lugg's office during the next few months.

"This is a unique opportunity for Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and the patients in our area to participate in a radically-new treatment technique for benign prostate disease," says Childs. "Dr. Lugg and I are very optimistic about the potential of cryotherapy to alleviate some of the symptoms of benign prostate disease. Possibly, men with very large prostates could be spared a major operation."
