Cheyenne and Wyoming

The Internet has become a source for just about any kind of information, including all sorts of health and medical information, not all of it accurate.

Some suggestions when looking for reliable health information the Internet: Good sites are endorsed by reputable third parties, such as publications or medical organizations, or they originate with the medical organizations, or they originate with the medical organizations themselves, such as the American Heart Association or American Academy of Pediatrics.

Information on the Internet can help provide better understanding of health issues involving you and your family, but should not be a substitute fro a relationship with your family doctor. If anything, the Internet should enhance that relationship, by making you more aware of what questions to ask of your doctor. (Information provided by "To Your Health" series.)

Cybercautions

Unfortunately, not all of the health information you’ll find on the Internet is reliable. Some information may be outdated, and some sites may contain information that's misleading or simply incorrect. In addition, because anyone with a computer can set up a Web site, not all medical sites are run by responsible, knowledgeable sources.

But there are several quick questions you can ask to get an idea if the information is legitimate:
Where does the information come from?
If the information was retrieved from an established medical institution like a hospital, university or government organization, it's more likely to be legitimate than information you get elsewhere.

Does the site reflect more than one opinion?
Quality sites often feature more than one perspective. This is especially important when the site deals with more specific topics. Few responsible organizations would claim to be the only source of information on a topic.

How often is the information updated?
If a site hasn’t been modified in several months, it might be an indication that the information it contains is outdated. Information should be updated at least monthly.

Does the site promote products or procedures?
You should be particularly cautious when you see sites that promote specific products or use testimonials as evidence. In addition, be suspicious of sites that dismiss mainstream science, contain statements that attack well-established medical policy, or offer a diagnosis over the modem.

To be safe, if you have any questions about the reliability of the medical information you’re getting on the Internet, check with your doctor before acting on it.
(Information provided by the "Mayo Clinic Health Letter".)

The Health on the Net Foundation’s Code of Conduct www.hon.ch/HONcode suggests consumers asks these questions when visiting any health site or receiving any health advice online:

What are the author’s credentials?
When were the clinical documents last modified?
What is the site’s policy regarding the confidentiality of data?
Does the site support its claims by offering references from reputable and peer-reviewed publications?
What is the site’s funding and advertisement policy?

Seek health information online as you would in real life: always be cautious, and always check the source.
